Case Study | A Masterclass in Hair Styling with Travis Balcke

The Global E-learning Market Size Will Exceed a Value of $374.3 Billion by 2026…

Masterclasses, also known as E-learning or E-training, have been a lucrative resource for punters looking to upskill in a plethora of areas for quite some time.

Sydney-based talent agency The Ministry of Talent has recently delved into crafting pay-per-view online masterclasses within the fashion and beauty space. They engaged JJW STUDIO to support the creation of their latest series with world-renowned hair director Travis Balcke.

World-Renowned Hair Stylist Travis Balcke

Travis Balcke has established himself as one of the most sought-after hairstylists, with a career that spans over a decade. Travis has lead hair teams for Maison Margiela, Stella McCartney, Thom Browne, and their front-row clientele for many a fashion show.

Travis continues to be the go-to hairstylist for some of the most iconic faces in the world, including Björk, Lady Gaga, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Sacha Baron Cohen, Isla Fisher, Kylie Minogue, Julianne Moore, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Affordable Hairstyles At Home

We found through research that hair tutorials were very few and far between on YouTube. Many videos are detailing how to pull a makeup look together across the web, but hair has been severely overlooked!

The Ministry of Talent and Travis wanted to guide people with the tips, tricks, and tools to create elevated looks with their hair from home. While high-end hair salons are fabulous, the everyday person may not be able to attend them regularly, but they still want to create an elevated look for work or a social gathering.

This masterclass was the solution to many problems The Ministry of Talent and JJW STUDIO uncovered throughout the research and strategy phase to serve an engaged audience ready to take their hairstyles to the next level.

Creating a Hair Salon In a Studio Space

To bring this masterclass to life, we captured all the content in a stylised studio space to emulate a hair salon over two days. We wanted to create a set that was rich with colours, texture, and hair salon finishes. In addition, it was essential for us to have a controlled environment where Travis could perform the creation of each hairstyle promptly. If we had shot in a hair salon, we’d be met with street noise, changing daylight, and sourcing a salon that would be closed for two consecutive days, which isn’t possible in Sydney.

While each course lesson outlined what we wanted to achieve, Travis utilised his vast experience to free-form educate the viewers as he has done previously with in-person training throughout each class we filmed. The result in Travis’ teachings was natural, informative, and personable.

Crafting Eight Impactful Course Lessons & Glossy Promotional Videos

JJW STUDIO was presented with a range of course lessons Travis wanted to guide viewers through to create hairstyles from home. These included “The Bun,” “The Halfway up,” and “The Ponytail”, to name a few. Take a look at some screenshots below from the course lessons.

All up JJW STUDIO crafted five-course lessons around hair styling, two introduction lessons and an outro. Outside of these requirements for the masterclass, we also crafted a handful of promotional videos used to generate sales across various digital platforms. Take a look at one of the promotional videos below.

A Successful Content Production Partnership

“Cannot recommend JJW STUDIO enough – not only can they turn around video production quickly and of incredible quality, the experience in the lead up to filming is always easy, efficient, and enjoyable.”

Creating Your Masterclass Is Only a Step Away

Many people approach JJW STUDIO to learn more about creating masterclasses, but they’re unsure if they “know enough” about their industry to teach others. The truth is that you don’t need to have years upon years of experience to sell and market your masterclass because there are people 3-5 (or even more) years behind you looking to upskill and progress in your industry! You’ll be surprised about how much you know and have experienced that you can share with an audience, so don’t let this put you off.
